Toymaker Dr Coppélius seems to have a beautiful young woman in his house: Coppélia, who sits and reads on his balcony. Franz and his fellow young villagers are curious about her and how she ignores them all. Even Franz’s fiancée Swanilda, although piqued by Franz’s interest in another woman, is curious. And when Dr Coppélius goes out, the young villagers slip into his house to introduce themselves to the strangely silent young woman.
A lighthearted look at the realms where fantasy meets reality, the characters in this comic romance derive from stories by E. T. A. Hoffmann. The Royal Ballet dance Ninette de Valois’ version of the nineteenth-century classic, which was created for them in 1954.
This performance stars Marianela
