Classic fairy tale meets modern morality play in a Glyndebourne gem. This much revived 1975 production of Stravinky’s The Rake’s Progress, was designed by David Hockney and directed by John Cox. It has travelled the world. Just as the composer and his librettists, W. H. Auden and Chester Kallman, reinvented eighteenth-century idiom, so Hockney took Hogarth’s paintings and re-imagined them as modern cartoons. Once seen, never forgotten.
Witty and sophisticated, this performance, recorded in 2010, stars Topi Lehtipuu, Miah Persson and Matthew Rose.
