Shot in Britain to escape the pressure of various leagues of decency - and because financing was easier to come by - Kubrick’s adaptation of Nabokov’s once scandalous novel features James Mason’s most accomplished performance as the fastidious college lecturer Humbert Humbert, who becomes erotically obsessed with the pubescent nymphet of the title (up-aged to 14). If inevitably compromised by the time and circumstances of its making, LOLITA seems to become more impressive as the years pass. Impeccable design and photography convey a tangible sense of a rootless American midwest through which Humbert passes with his love in a doomed attempt to keep Lolita’s affections and escape retribution. Funny, cruel and poignant, rising to supreme moments of black farce and pathos; with superb cameos from Shelley Winters as Lolita’s sex-starved mother and Peter Sellers in protean guise as Humbert’s nemesis Quilty.
