Puccini’s melodrama about a volatile diva, a sadistic police chief and an idealistic artist has thrilled audiences for more than a century.

The story is set in a politically unstable Rome of June 1800, as the city awaits news of its fate from the Battle of Marengo against the French in the north. A former consul of the short-lived Roman Republic, has escaped prison, and seeks refuge in the church of Sant'Andrea della Valle. He is helped by the painter Mario Cavaradossi. But Baron Scarpia, Rome's sinister chief of police, is determined to find the prisoner and also covets Cavaradossi’s lover, Floria Tosca.

John Macfarlane’s beautiful Roman settings provide a thrilling backdrop for a star cast - Anna Netrebko in the role of  Tosca, Brian Jagde as her lover Cavaradossi and Michael Volle as Baron Scarpia. Billy de Bertrand conducts this revival of David McVicar’s 2017 production.
