The Monsterverse is back with the titanic Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire. Marking director Adam Wingard's second entry in the series, following 2021's much- loved Godzilla Vs. Kong, it's another dip into the world of the titular Titans.

When we left them, the world- famous, skyscraper-busting Godzilla and the giant Skull Island simian Kong were supersized rivals, at each other's throats as they vied for supremacy and terrain.

Although Godzilla and Kong take centre stage again, the Monsterverse has always prided itself on its human contingent and this instalment is no different. Returning to our screens is Rebecca Hall, who reprises her role as Dr Ilene Andrews, the scientist who previously ventured into Hollow Earth, the unique subterranean world with, as she puts it, "more secrets than we could possibly imagine".

Once again, she's joined by Kaylee Hottle, who plays Jia, the deaf orphaned Iwi girl from Skull Island whom Andrews adopted at the end of Godzilla Vs. Kong.

Also back is Brian Tyree Henry as Bernie Hayes, the former Apex technician turned Titan conspiracy expert.

Joining the cast are British actor (and Hall's former university friend) Dan Stevens, who worked with Wingard in the 2014 thriller The Guest, and Chinese actress Fala Chen, star of Marvel's Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings.

This time, Godzilla and Kong are not the only Titans in town. As the title suggests, there is a new empire – and new foes – to consider, as our giant heroes are pitted against a threat (or threats!) that could wipe out all of humanity.

With Wingard's key behind-the-scenes team also returning, including the ever-inventive production designer Tom Hammock and visual effects supremos DNEG, this promises to be the biggest entry into the Monsterverse yet.

It's a colourful blockbuster and an epic clash of the Titans – and if you're near a Picturehouse you'd better take cover. Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire will shake cinemas to their foundations.    James Mottram
