It's the summer of 1984, Margaret Thatcher is in power, and the National Union of Mineworkers is on strike.
A group of gay and lesbian activists, led by the young, determined Mark Ashton, decide to raise money to support the miners – but the Union seem embarrassed to receive their support.
The activists are not deterred, and, hatching a plan to make their presence felt, set off to a mining village in deepest Wales to make their donation in person.
