Lecturer: Dr. Jamie Steele
Outline: Greta Gerwig: The Blockbuster Filmmaker of the 2020s
In this evening course we will analyse the blockbuster filmmaker of the 2020s, Greta Gerwig, and her crossover film, Barbie (2023). In the session, we will discuss Greta Gerwig’s approach to storytelling and narrative techniques – including how she structures stories on screen and formulates dialogue in her films. Clips from her earlier films, Lady Bird (2017) and Little Women (2019) will be used to see how her techniques have evolved. The session will explore – how Gerwig develops her narratives and how she constructs her stories? How she approaches dialogue and scriptwriting? And how she articulates key themes – such as her own background – into her films.
Recommended Viewing: Barbie (Greta Gerwig, 2023)
