What's on at Hackney Picturehouse - Discover Tuesdays
For 25 years, Lauren Greenfield’s documentary photography and film projects have explored youth culture, gender, body image and affluence. In this fascinating meld of career retrospective and film essay, she offers a meditation on her extensive body of work. It’s a postcard from the edge of the American Empire, and a snapshot of a materialistic, image-obsessed culture. Exploring the modern world’s unyielding aspiration for wealth, the film bears witness to the global boom-bust economy, the corrupted American Dream and the human costs of late-stage capitalism, narcissism and greed. From her earliest photo studies of the seemingly privileged lives of Los Angeles high-school students, to her look at the pitfalls of extreme wealth in The Queen Of Versailles, Greenfield’s work becomes a cautionary tale about our insatiable desire for more.
The Discover Tuesdays preview screenings on Tuesday 17 July are followed by an exclusive recorded Q&A with director Lauren Greenfield hosted by journalist Kate Muir.
