Yuli + Satellite Q&A

Director: Icíar Bollaín
Starring: Carlos Acosta, Santiago Alfonso, Keyvin Martínez
Duration: 180 min

This special screening will be followed by a Live Satellite Q&A with Carlos Acosta, Icíar Bollaín and Paul Laverty.

A biopic of the Cuban classical ballet dancer, Carlos Acosta. The director Icíar Bollaín (The Olive Tree) presents the rags-to-riches story of this legend of the dance world. Acosta spent his childhood in poverty on the outskirts of Havana and ended up spending 17 years as principal dancer at The Royal Ballet in London, their first black Romeo. Yet Acosta was the dancer who did not want to dance; it was his tough lorry-driver father (Alfonso) who both coerced and inspired his young son. In this part biopic, part interpretive dance piece, Acosta narrates his own story through movement while two young actors (Núñez and Martínez) play out the past. Based on Acosta’s 2007 memoir, No Way Home, this is a vibrant telling of a story about family, sacrifice, maleness, black identity, exile and the transforming power of art
