The Escape

Director: Dominic Savage
Starring: Dominic Cooper, Gemma Arterton
Duration: 101 min

Tara (Arterton) appears to have everything – a loving husband, young children and an opulent home. “You’ve got it made,” declares her single, working-class mother, seeing only her daughter’s upwardly mobile lifestyle. But as Tara does the household chores and looks after the children, she’s confused, depressed and lost. The Escape is the story of Tara’s despair and of her awakening. It's also the story of one man’s struggle to understand his wife's pain. For how can Tara possibly explain her unhappiness when she doesn’t understand it herself? The resulting tortured and tender chemistry between leads Gemma Arterton and Dominic Cooper is profoundly affecting, at times shattering. Thrilling in its complexity and with a powerful Bergmanesque intensity, this is a film about realising that the life you have may not be the one you want.
