Ready to fall in love, again and again? Emerald Fennell shocked cinema audiences everywhere when her directorial debut Promising Young Woman hit the big screen in 2020 – a skewering, hyper-stylised thriller that announced her arrival as a filmmaker unafraid to provoke. She followed it up with 2023's Saltburn, a twisted, satirical rollercoaster ride about a murderous social climber that topped the streaming charts and set the internet alight. Now, the Academy Award-winning visionary is back – and this time, it's with her own bold, original take inspired by one of the greatest love stories of all time: "Wuthering Heights".
Two of the most charismatic actors of their generation lead this new version of the iconic gothic romance – Barbie and Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood superstar Margot Robbie (being directed by Fennell for the first time, after producing both of her previous films), and Saltburn's Jacob Elordi, fresh from garnering acclaim for his transformation into The Creature in Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of Frankenstein. As Cathy and Heathcliff, their forbidden passion for one another eventually turns from amorous to intoxicating in Fennell's epic tale of lust, love and madness.
The pair are surrounded by a stellar supporting cast, including The Whale's Hong Chau, Saltburn alumni Alison Oliver and House Of The Dragon star Ewan Mitchell. Behind the camera, Fennell has reunited with several of her Saltburn collaborators, including director of photography Linus Sandgren and production designer Suzie Davies, as well as enlisting the talents of Barbie and Spencer costume designer Jacqueline Durran to serve up some seriously stylish outfits. Plus, Cathy and Heathcliff's piping hot chemistry will be soundtracked by original songs from the queen of cool herself, Charli xcx. Check out the use of her Everything Is Romantic remix with Caroline Polachek in the film's trailer for a taste of the vibe to come.
Mix all that movie-making goodness together, and you've got the promise of a classic Fennell feature: stunning visuals, an intoxicating atmosphere and plenty of mega-viral moments that you (and every film fan you know) won't be able to stop talking about.
In cinemas from 13 February, "Wuthering Heights" is the ultimate Valentine's Day treat – and if the crowd-pleasing Promising Young Woman and Saltburn are anything to go by, this is a movie you'll want to see with a packed Picturehouse audience. Grab your partner, grab your friends and get ready to swoon.
