18+ only Programme includes an introduction & intermission Cult film night BAR TRASH returns to the Club Room at Finsbury Park Picturehouse with our 14th sensational season — TRASH PLANET 3: APOCALYPSE! — and an overlooked ‘80s classic, Steve De Jarnatt’s MIRACLE MILE (1988).

“THE ULTIMATE THRILLER FROM THE COMPANY THAT BROUGHT YOU PLATOON, SALVADOR AND TERMINATOR”* In 1983, American Film magazine listed MIRACLE MILE as one of the ‘ten best unmade screenplays’, recognising its apparently unfilmable blend of black-as-pitch rom-com and apocalyptic doomsday thriller. Years later, Steve De Jarnatt bought back the rights to his own script and made the film on his own terms. The result is a mad-cap end-of-the-world adventure like no other, as hilarious as it is disturbing, featuring immersive views of nocturnal L.A. and a hypnotic score by Tangerine Dream.

Mis-sold on its theatrical release — *the tagline wildly distorts the film’s dark absurdity — MIRACLE MILE eventually disappeared into cult obscurity, making it ripe for re-discovery when it was finally re-mastered for home video in 2015. Ticking down in real time to what appears to be the end of the world, true fan and filmmaker Mark J. Blackman described MIRACLE MILE as “either the most romantic film about the apocalypse or the most apocalyptic film about romance” (Science Fiction Theatre) and gets our new season off to “a welcome blast!” (Village Voice).
