A strange crew descends on the Florida Everglades: a San Francisco yuppie, a local journalist, a blood thirsty senior citizen, and a father on the edge of a conspiracy. They’re all here for the eponymous Python Hunt, a yearly competion that aGracts amateur hunters interested in the supposedly ethical challenge of culling an invasive species. The Florida Government sponsors this conservation effort, and prizes are given to the group that can successfully slay the most snakes. Like the elusive creature at the center of the film, Xander Robbin’s Python Hunt sheds expectations at every turn. This quirky, character focused documentary quietly transforms into a melancholic odyssey through one of America's most mysterious landscapes. There’s a lot of waiting, wandering, and wading through traffic. Our hunters struggle to reconcile their ac8ons with the reality of the competion- it’s less of a thrilling chase, more of a Godot-like gamut. Robin approaches the Everglades with equal measures of curiosity and affection, finding unexpected humour in its colourful personalities while allowing its dense wetlands and sprawling marshes to take on a dreamlike quality. The result captures a place and a people who are quietly untethered from reality. There’s an easy throughline of “humans are the real monsters” through the gamified burmese extinction effort, but Robin prods at something a bit more interesting by asking how effective our actions really are when we’re trapped in a shared myth. Come for the grilled snake, stay for the scenery. This UK Premiere will be followed by a video Q&A with director Xander Robin. - Maurielle McGarvey
