Casual Readers Club, FEELS. and Dark Matter have joined forces to present this exclusive preview of AMERICAN FICTION, Cord Jefferson’s hilarious directorial debut based on the novel Erasure by Percival Everett.
Monk (Jeffrey Wright) is a frustrated novelist who’s fed up with the establishment profiting from “Black” entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, Monk uses a pen name to write an outlandish “Black” book of his own – a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.
After the screening, we will dive into an interactive discussion about the film’s many themes such as cultural stereotypes, tired tropes, good vs bad representation and what is deemed 'Black' entertainment.
The discussion will be led by founders India Chambers, Aleah Scott and Micallar Walker. More about their respective ventures is below.
