DIR: JOHN MINTON. WITH: MARC BESSANT, JASON WILLIAMSON. UK 2025. 82 mins.
The 1990s Bristol rave scene and the nearby rural landscape are the contrasting backdrops for this edgy, atmospheric drama.
An injured man with a stolen bag of drugs and cash is trapped upside down in a car that has crashed in a secluded wood. He’s bleeding and unable to free himself. When a dog arrives, followed hours later by a poacher, things spiral even more out of control and a fight for survival ensues. As events escalate, flashbacks are intercut with a hallucinogenic vision of the natural world, heightened by the trippiest version of Ravel’s Boléro that you’re ever likely to hear.
There are strong performances from Marc Bessant as the shifty ageing raver, and Sleaford Mods lead singer Jason Williamson, the menacing poacher. Game is co-written and produced by Portishead musician Geoff Barrow, a regular collaborator with the film’s director John Minton.
