"We’ve gone on holiday by mistake!"
Welcome to Harbour Highlights, a monthly series of cult and classic films handpicked by the Harbour Lights staff.
This month, we’re leaning heavily on the former description with a choice described by the BBC as “one of Britain’s biggest cult film” – 1987’s Withnail and I, as chosen by Chloe.
Released without fuss in late 1987, Bruce Robinson’s film made little impact at the cinema but re-emerged a couple of years later as a VHS favourite with word of mouth spurring it on to become one of the most quotable films of all time.
Featuring iconic performances from Paul McGann (in his debut role) and Richard E. Grant as the misanthropic Withnail, along with one of the finest scripts available to humanity, the film has been regularly voted one of the greatest British films of all time and inspired the works of other directors (including Shane Black and David Fincher) and the creation of a dubious drinking game. And while that last one is probably best enjoyed at home – for one thing, our bar doesn’t stock lighter fluid – the rest of the film’s legacy is best celebrated on the big screen.
