Become a memberDonnie Darko's mix of teenage drama, time travel and horror makes it difficult to pin down. This four-hour talk and workshop at Picturehouse @ FACT explores how Richard Kelly's film became a cult favourite, and why audiences keep returning to films like it. We'll look closely at scenes, the soundtrack and the film's unsettling humour, making room for different readings of Frank and the questions the story leaves open. The conversation will widen to the history of cult cinema, including midnight screenings, home video and fan discussion, and how audiences can give a film a life beyond its first release. For writers and filmmakers, there's plenty to explore in the film's approach to storytelling and its relationship with the viewer. Film fans are equally welcome: no previous film study or project is needed, and there'll be time to share your own readings and discuss other films you think deserve a cult following. The afternoon includes a break. Please note that the workshop may discuss key scenes and the ending of Donnie Darko before the evening screening. The film is ticketed separately.
