Become a memberGuillermo del Toro's fairy tales ask a lot of their characters. Children face impossible choices, monsters set the rules, and the adults can be more frightening than anything in the woods. This four-hour talk and workshop takes Pan's Labyrinth as a way into del Toro's cinema and the longer history of fantasy on screen. Through close discussion of scenes, we'll explore how he uses fairy tales to write about childhood and disobedience, and how the film's imagined world sits alongside the violence of fascist Spain. The afternoon is for writers and filmmakers as well as anyone interested in film history, theory or del Toro's work. There'll be time to discuss the films together and consider what these approaches to fantasy might offer your own writing or filmmaking. No previous study or project is needed. Please note: the workshop will discuss key scenes and story details from Pan's Labyrinth. The evening screening is ticketed separately.
