A forged banknote is passed between a group of schoolboys and eventually reaches Yvon, a young delivery driver who is arrested while trying to spend it. From there, one careless act begins to take over his life, costing him his job and drawing him towards crime, imprisonment and violence.
Released in 1983, L’Argent was Robert Bresson’s final film. He tells the story with very little explanation, concentrating instead on actions, exchanges and the movement of objects from one person to another.
After the screening, Cornish filmmaker Mark Jenkin will lead the conversation. Mark has described L’Argent as Bresson’s greatest film and one of the films that has most influenced his own work.
The session will look at Bresson’s unusual approach to performance, his restrained camera work and the abrupt way he cuts between dialogue and action. Mark will also discuss what he has taken from the film himself, including the use of a single lens and the composition from L’Argent that he referenced in the opening shot of Enys Men.
Mark is the writer and director of Bait, Enys Men and Rose of Nevada. His films are closely associated with Cornwall and are made through a hands-on process involving 16mm photography, editing and constructed sound.
