Join the London Australian Film Society for a very special UK premiere of Indigenous anthology film We Are Still Here, as we mark both Australia Day and Waitangi Day at Hackney Picturehouse!

Ten leading Indigenous filmmakers interweave eight powerful tales to tell a sweeping story of hope and survival in the face of oppression and colonization, traversing 1000 years from the past to the present and into the future.

When a traditional fisherwoman and her daughter encounter an ominous ship, it foreshadows stormy seas and a tragedy to follow. From the deserts of Central Australia, to the lush green rainforests of New Zealand, and the muddy battlefields of Europe, We Are Still Here explores stories of kinship, loss, grief, and resilience through the eyes of eight protagonists. Demonstrating the strength of love and hope to overcome the shared traumas facing Indigenous people from Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific, it offers a powerful reminder that “in order to move forward, we must first look back”.

Australian snacks and sweets will be on sale, and a raffle will be held before the screening.

With thanks to Visit Films.

* LAFS recognises that January 26 is not a day of celebration for all people, and have held our ‘Australia Day’ screenings on an alternate date since 2018.
