The nation's oldest surviving cinema, a beloved part of Brighton's heritage, and a beacon for film fans everywhere - enjoy a guided morning tour of the historic Duke of York’s Picturehouse and learn about over 115 years of history.

Whilst being shown all around the beautiful Grade II-listed building (including behind-the-scenes in the projection booth), you'll hear about the cinema's earliest days as a grand Edwardian-picture palace, the changing culture of cinema-going and the movies, just how the Duke's survived all this time, as well as the remarkable personal stories of the characters who left such a legacy on this iconic Brighton landmark.

FAQ

  • The tour meeting point is outside the front of the cinema. The doors will be open 10 minutes before the start time for attendees to use the facilities if needed.
  • The tour will be around 1 hour and 45 minutes. There will be an opportunity to sit down around halfway through whilst we visit the auditorium.
  • The first part of the tour takes place outside in front of the cinema and will also involve walking down the side of the building.
  • Audience questions are encouraged and taking photos is allowed in most areas.
  • Due to the nature of the building, some areas of the tour (such as the projection booth) are only accessible by staircase, and some may find some steps steep.
  • Spaces on each tour will be limited to 16 people. Pre-booking is essential.
