Should a newborn dairy calf be separated from its mother? It’s the most divisive question in dairy farming. At Rainton Farm in south-west Scotland, one couple decided to do things differently.
A Dairy Story follows David and Wilma Finlay as they abandon conventional methods and build the first farm in Europe to make a cow-with-calf dairy system commercially viable.
What begins as a question of animal welfare opens into climate, environment, and ultimately something far more personal: a story about change, about trusting nature, and about the time we have together.

Every screening on the tour is followed by a panel conversation including by David Finlay, the farmer at the heart of the film, joined in each venue by voices from the growing cow-with-calf farming movement alongside the film’s partners.

Philip Lymbery, Global CEO of Compassion in World Farming, hosts a conversation with David Finlay of Rainton Farm and Rebecca Mayhew of Pasture for Life and Old Hall Farm, Woodton, both pioneering farms where the dairy calves stay with their mothers.

Peter Stevenson, Chief Policy Advisor at Compassion in World Farming, will host a discussion with David Finlay and Charles Ellett of Rainton Farm, alongside Fred Berkmiller chef patron of Edinburgh’s l’escargot bleu; and Charlie Buchanan-Smith of The Free Company, the Michelin Green Star regenerative farm and restaurant at the foot of the Pentlands.

Anthony Field, Head of Compassion in World Farming UK, will host a conversation with David Finlay who features in the farm alongside local cow-with-calf dairy farmers Sam Bullingham of Taw River Dairy, Devon's own calf-at-foot dairy, and Barry Davies of Norton Court Farm, Gloucestershire, currently transitioning his herd to a cow-with-calf system.

Ed Ayton, Sustainable Sourcing Advisor for Abel & Cole, will be bringing some cheese and biscuits for attendees to try as he hosts a discussion with David Finlay, the farmer at the heart of the film and Jon Cook of Dora's Dairy near Swindon, a fourth-generation family farm where calves stay with their mothers.
