Based on the 1826 novel – previously adapted on film in 1936 – the film stars Daniel Day Lewis as Hawkeye, a white man adopted by the Mohicans, who finds himself responsible for the daughter of a British officer (Madeline Stowe).
As the pair find themselves caught in the French and Indian War, they must fight to survive as they begin to find themselves falling for each other. Directed by Michael Mann, it came between his TV movie LA Takedown and its big screen remake Heat and proved to be his most financially successful film to date.
Winner of Best Sound at the Academy Awards (the only Oscar won by a Mann-directed film) and nominated for seven BAFTA awards, including one for Day-Lewis, the film remains a stunning showcase for Mann’s style and Day-Lewis’s intense performance as well as its stunning cinematography and score.
