Each film has been chosen for its place in our story — a celebration of the wonder and shared experiences that have filled our screens and auditorium for nine decades.
A landmark documentary filmed during the opening stages of the Battle of the Somme, capturing British troops as they prepare for and launch one of the First World War’s most devastating offensives. Structured around the days leading up to 1 July 1916, the film follows the artillery bombardment, infantry advances, and the grim aftermath of battle, offering audiences at the time an unprecedented glimpse of frontline warfare. One of the earliest feature-length war documentaries ever made, it remains a vital historical record and a powerful reflection on the realities of conflict.
