Oscar winner Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car)'s first film made in France is based on a correspondence between two women – a philosopher and an anthropologist – exploring illness and the sudden deterioration of health.
A fiction film nonetheless, All of a Sudden embodies the principles of care its protagonists Marie-Lou (Virginie Efira) and Mari (Tao Okamoto) explore in life and art, through storytelling techniques of the gentlest kind – conversations, peripatetic discussions, and mutual understanding.
An utopian film perhaps, but one that urges us to care for each other in new, unexpected ways when life suddenly changes for the worse.
The Cambridge Film Festival is presented by the Cambridge Film Trust, a registered charity widening access to cinema and supporting emerging talent through film, education and community programmes.
