Believe it or not, we open this year's festival with the million-dollar question: Is Emma Stone an alien or not? Yes, that's exactly what Oscar-winner Yorgos Lanthimos asks us to consider in his latest film, Bugonia (2025).
It's also the central suspicion of Teddy (Jesse Plemons), a solitary beekeeper and conspiracy theorist, who kidnaps a powerful pharmaceutical CEO (Emma Stone) in hopes of exposing her as an extraterrestrial. True to Lanthimos’ dark humour and flair for satirical hyperbole, Bugonia (2025) is a rollicking ride from scepticism to conviction, posing some of the most urgent questions of our post-truth era. Expect a truly eye-opening experience, courtesy of Lanthimos’ remake of the cult Korean film Save the Green Planet! (2003), complete with spine-chilling performances from Plemons and Stone. Oh—and plenty of giggles.
