Norwich Film Festival presents a rare 35mm screening of Mamoru Oshii’s landmark anime Ghost in the Shell, in collaboration with the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA).
This English-dubbed 35mm print dates from the film’s original international release and offers audiences an exceptional opportunity to experience one of the most influential works of Japanese animation in its original cinematic format.
Set in 2029, the film follows cybernetic government agent Major Motoko Kusanagi and Section 9 as they hunt the Puppet Master - a mysterious hacker capable of infiltrating human minds. As the investigation deepens, Kusanagi is drawn into profound questions about consciousness, identity and what it means to be human in an increasingly technological world.
Based on Masamune Shirow’s groundbreaking cyberpunk manga, Oshii’s visionary film combines extraordinary hand-drawn animation, action and philosophical storytelling. Its influence can be felt across decades of science-fiction cinema, yet few audiences will ever have the opportunity to experience it like this.
