Norfolk Folklore Society, in partnership with Norwich History Festival and Reel Connections present WITCHFINDER GENERAL + Introduction & short archive film.
“He has the right to hang them in the sight of God…”
The Norfolk Folklore Society invites you to an unholy night of righteous terror, rural horror and East Anglian evil as they present Witchfinder General (1968) in collaboration with Reel Connections and Cinema City.
Shot on location in Norfolk and Suffolk, and based on real historical events, Witchfinder General tells the harrowing story of Matthew Hopkins, the self-appointed witch-hunter who blackmailed, tortured and executed his way across East Anglia during the English Civil War.
Starring a viciously restrained Vincent Price, this brutal, beautiful film is widely considered a masterpiece of British folk horror.
Hopkins wasn’t a fantasy - he was real. And the landscapes he haunts in the film are our own: ruined churches, wind-blown fields, lost villages. Here, horror rises not from demons or devils but from dreadful men in power.
Now considered one of the most important horror films of all time, this is folk horror at its most grounded and grim: no monsters, no magic—just cruelty, fear and the terrifying collapse of order.
Before the screening, Norfolk Folklore Society’s Stacia Briggs and Siofra Connor will introduce the film, exploring its historical roots, folkloric themes and impact on the genre, while Shuck Zine artist Matt Willis will be selling his eerie artwork in the gallery.
This event is presented in collaboration with Reel Connections, a not-for-profit organisation that uses film, music and the arts to connect people across Norfolk and the East of England.
Before and after the screening, the bar will be transformed into a folk horror haven, complete with a DJ set full of sinister strings, rustic rhythms, and witchy bangers.
Guests will also receive a free special-edition badge to commemorate this chilling night of East Anglian horror.
