An engrossing drama unfolds when a mysterious female soldier disguised as a man arrives at a village in 17th-century Germany.
The soldier claims the inheritance of a local farmhouse and gradually seems to gain the acceptance of the villagers despite their initial suspicions. But as her relationships with others develop, so does the sense of intrigue and foreboding. The film is anchored by Sandra Hüller’s superb performance, which received the Silver Bear award at this year’s Berlin Film Festival. Her wide-ranging career includes roles in Project Hail Mary, The Zone of Interest, Anatomy of a Fall, Toni Erdmann and Fatherland. Rose is a timely and unflinching examination of gender roles and societal pressures, and what happens when someone disrupts these expectations.
‘Not since Sally Potter’s breakout feature Orlando has a film explored gender privilege so effectively through a historical lens and via a singularly astounding European actress.’ Ryan Lattanzio, Indiewire
