Mike Leigh’s latest film – widely rumoured to be the last that he will direct – is a rich and compelling portrait of friendship, family ties and ageing.

Social workers and best friends Amy and Rosie find joy in the everyday while coping with demanding jobs, worries about relatives and relationship breakdowns. Amy’s parents, Birdie and Geoff, enjoy lives of quiet contentment until declining health threatens their peaceful existence. Among the highlights of Leigh’s long and distinguished career are the films Hard Truths, Peterloo, Vera Drake and Secrets and Lies.

Tender Loving Care is full of the intricate detail, gentle humour and believable characters that are the trademarks of Leigh’s work. Yet again he shows us the value of the small moments in day-to-day life.
