DIR: ANDREW HAIGH. WITH: FRED HECHINGER, EBON MOSS-BACHRACH, CAITRÍONA BALFE, KIT CONNOR, D’PHAROAH WOON-A-TAI. CANADA, UK 2026. 117 MINS.
Director Andrew Haigh (All Of Us Strangers, 45 Years, Weekend) returns to the screen with an atmospheric story set among the snowy mountains of Colorado.
It’s the 1950s. Mikey is a young man living with his parents and brother, who is about to depart to Korea to complete his national service. After stumbling upon a family secret, a seismic event ruptures Mikey’s day-to-day existence. The cast features Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear, Girls) as the young man’s stern and uncommunicative father. Based on a Colm Tóibín short story, A Long Winter is an absorbing drama in which repressed desire seeps through the fractures in these characters’ lives.
‘It is a poignant, subversive study of grief and desire, and the terrible, infantilised loneliness of men without women; it is fiercely acted, and wonderfully shot by cinematographer André Turpin.’ Peter Bradshaw, TheGuardian
Followed by Q&A with director Andrew Haigh broadcast live from MUBI FEST.
