Join filmmaker and curator Tomisin Adepeju for the launch of "From Short to Long Form," a programme that celebrates the debut features of bold, distinct film-makers alongside their short-form work. For its inaugural edition, Tomisin will present the films of BAFTA-winning director and video artist, Savanah Leaf. From her poetic debut short, "The Ayes Have It" (2017), to the transcendent "The Heart Still Hums" (2020) and finally, her nuanced and deeply emotive BIFA & BAFTA-winning debut feature, "Earth Mama." Leaf is undoubtedly one of the most exciting film-makers working today, her singular voice is urgent and timely and her lyrical and subtly understated character studies potently explore themes around identity, love, motherhood and community. There will be a post-screening discussion with Savanah about the themes and ideas that have shaped her extraordinary body of work. THE AYES HAVE IT (2017) A biracial woman performs a poem about her experiences in the American South. THE HEART STILL HUMS (2020) Co-directed with Taylor Russell, this documentary short follows five women as they fight for their children through the cycle of homelessness, drug addiction, and neglect from their own parents. Unique, yet undoubtedly familiar to many; a story about fear, sacrifice and the unconditional love between a mother and her children. EARTH MAMA (2023) With two children in foster care, Gia, a pregnant single mother pitted against the system, fights to reclaim her family. In her close-knit Bay Area community, she works to make a life for herself and her kids. Savanah Leaf Savanah Leaf is an award-winning artist and filmmaker working across narrative film, documentary, and installation. As a former Team GB volleyball player at the London 2012 Olympics and Sports Hall of Famer, she brings a deep physical awareness to her cinematic practice. Her debut feature Earth Mama premiered at Sundance and screened internationally before its theatrical release in 2023 with A24 and Universal films. The film earned Leaf the BAFTA award for outstanding debut, a BIFA for best directorial debut, Independent spirit award nominations, and recognition on the national board of review’s best debut films of 2023. Leaf’s installation series run first exhibited at Hauser & Wirth los Angeles in 2023. Run 002 premiered at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2024 and later exhibited at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in 2025. Run 003 first exhibited at Pérez art Museum Miami in 2026. Tomisin Adepeju Tomisin Adepeju is a British-Nigerian filmmaker, writer and curator. His award-winning shorts have screened at over 150 film festivals, including Sundance, BFI London Film Festival and Edinburgh International Film Festival. He has just completed a new short for BBC Films and is currently developing his debut feature, The Light of the Living with Ken Loach’s Sixteen Films and BFI. Tomisin's writings have appeared on MUBI, Sight and Sound and several other publications. He is the founder of DAILIES, a screening programme where he regularly curates shorts and feature films. He has programmed sold out events at BFI Southbank, Rio Cinema, Rich Mix and other spaces.
