“Who's going to believe a talking head?”
Welcome to Harbour Highlights, a series of cult and classic favourite, handpicked by the staff of Harbour Lights.
This month, Poppy takes us into the laboratory of Herbert West to resurrect cult horror classic Re-Animator for its 40th anniversary. Based on the 1922 H. P. Lovecraft story, Re-Animator follows medical student Herbert West as he and a colleague develop a serum that reanimates the dead. As West’s dangerous experiments on dead bodies lead to horrific side-effects and expulsion from his college, he clashes with a professor who wishes to steal not only West’s work, but his colleague's fiancée.
Released in the UK in 1986, Re-Animator found itself cut by the BBFC and soon grouped in alongside the so-called Video Nasties of the era. It took over 20 years before the uncensored version was available in the UK, by which time the film’s gory, unhinged black comedy had achieved cult status and Jeffrey Combs’ portrayal of Herbert West had become a horror icon. Join us in celebrating the film’s legacy in this special big screen showing.
