19:45 - Red carpet arrival

Tread the red carpet as you arrive with time to mingle with your fellow cinema fans with a free glass of prosecco* on arrival.

20:15 - Early filmmaking in Brighton and Hove 1897-1903, G.A Smith and Laura Bayley

A rare and unique opportunity to see some of the earliest motion pictures ever made in one of the oldest cinemas in the world. Enjoy a free choc ice (as back in the day) with a selection of short films made by the group who became renowned as The Brighton School. Featuring a live score by local musician Phoebe Bentham.

20:30 - Sherlock Jr.

Be transported back to the golden age of the silver screen with Buster Keaton’s seminal slapstick 1924 silent movie following the romantic travails of a wannabe-detective cinema projectionist. A film released over a century ago that would have marvelled audiences in this very auditorium at the time. 

21:15 - Guest panel discussion

Following the films, we’ll be hosting a guest panel discussion welcoming cinema historians, experts, and associates, including Allen Eyles, Jon Barranechea, and Alexia Lazou, hosted by our very own Flick Beckett to discuss the history and legacy of the Duke of York’s.
