White Man Walking traces the shocking, gruelling and emotional 1500 mile walk that film maker Rob Bliss embarked on in 2020, walking through America’s southern states in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, wearing a Black Lives Matter tee-shirt. In July 2020, Rob Bliss, a young, white filmmaker, posted a video of what happened when he held up a ‘Black Lives Matter’ sign in Harrison, Arkansas, 'the most racist town in America'. It went viral, attracting 12 million views. What Bliss did next was remarkable. Over 1500 miles, two months and 25 miles a day, he set out to walk through the American South, wearing a Black Lives Matter t-shirt, and a sign that invited people to ‘come walk with me’. His goal was simple: to take the conversation Floyd’s murder had sparked about racism in American society into the places where it was most needed, yet most silent. This film captures his encounters with a diverse range of people, some filled with rage that Rob, a white man, should dare align himself with the BLM movement, others supportive and willing to join his walk for a short distance. The journey takes a huge physical and emotional toll on Rob who finds his ‘white privilege‘ eroded over his use of three words – ‘Black Lives Matter’ - that during one summer, ignited a fire and provoked worldwide protest following the public murder of George Floyd - an African American man - by a white Minneapolis police officer. We follow the highs and lows of his two month walk. We see Rob step out of his own echo chamber - despite encountering aggression and abuse. He seeks out the conversations others are avoiding: face to face. The realities of the views and emotions of real people are explored, through the simple act of walking with a slogan t-shirt and inviting a conversation.
