Course Overview This 6-week course introduces students to Video Art as a contemporary art form. Students will explore historical and current practices, develop their own video art project from concept to completion, and learn to use accessible mobile technology for production and post-production. Learning Outcomes - Understand the historical context and significance of video art - Develop conceptual thinking through sketchbook documentation - Gain practical skills in video production using mobile technology - Complete an original video art piece responding to a set theme Weekly Structure Week 1: Introduction to Video Art - Survey of key video artists and movements - Discussion of foundational works and techniques - Introduction to course theme/topic Week 2: Conceptual Development - Sketchbook methodology and visual research - Storyboarding and pre-production planning - Individual concept development sessions Week 3: Mobile Videography Techniques - Camera techniques for mobile devices - Lighting, composition, and movement - Location scouting and practical considerations Week 4: Production Week - Guided filming sessions - Troubleshooting technical challenges - Collection of visual assets Week 5: Mobile Editing Workshop - Introduction to mobile editing applications - Basic editing techniques and effects - Sound design and integration Week 6: Final Production & Critique - Project completion - Group screening and discussion - Reflection on process and outcomes Students will be given feedback on their completed video art piece, sketchbook development process, and participation in discussions and critiques. About the tutor: Matthew Harris is an accomplished filmmaker and educator with 25 years of award-winning experience in video production and media. As the founder of The Blah Blah Company, he combines creative vision with practical expertise to deliver results. Matthew holds a BA Hons in Video Production and more recently an MPhil in Screen Media and Culture from the University of Cambridge. His extensive teaching background spans multiple positions in Further and Higher Education, where he has provided students with both technical skills and artistic insight. His recent film, "A Kaleidoscope of Butterflies," has garnered international recognition, showcasing at festivals worldwide and earning an official selection at the Norwich Film Festival 2024. This practical industry experience informs his teaching approach, offering students relevant, current perspectives on filmmaking craft. With a passion for innovation and a commitment to nurturing emerging talent, Matthew brings both academic rigor and real-world production knowledge to his role as a practical filmmaking tutor.
