The first biography of Bergman in 40 years, containing exclusive extracts from workbooks and letters. Peter Cowie’s book chronicles the life and the 60-year film and stage career of Bergman as he wrestles with themes of love, sex and betrayal as the figure of Death hovers overhead.
Peter Cowie's passion for cinema started at Cambridge while he was an undergraduate student at Magdalene College from 1959 to 1962; his first published article was in the university weekly, "Broadsheet", and was a piece on Bergman's WILD STRAWBERRIES.
In 1963 he founded the annual “International Film Guide”, which he edited for four decades. His more than thirty books include studies of Orson Welles, Francis Ford Coppola, and Akira Kurosawa, as well as more than a dozen commentaries on classic films for The Criterion Collection, and has lectured in four continents.
We are delighted to welcome Peter Cowie to Cambridge Arts to introduce this screening of Wild Strawberries and to celebrate the publication of this ground-breaking biography. The screening will be followed by a Q&A.
