Claé and Bruó are secret agents working for enemy kingdoms, tracking mysterious creatures known as ‘perlimps’ to save the Enchanted Forest. To succeed, they will have to overcome their differences and work together. This dreamlike and moving adventure will appeal to fans of Studio Ghibli: Perlimps shares the Japanese studio’s interest in eco-fables that encourage us to revel in and fight for the natural world. The animation is both original and beautiful: a lush Brazilian rainforest (under threat) is evoked through painterly brush strokes and gorgeous smudges in a spectrum of jewel-like colours, inspired by the papercuts of French painter Henri Matisse. Abreu’s previous film, Boy and the World (2013) was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. With Perlimps, the Brazilian director again creates a brilliantly imaginative world with a poignant environmental message.
