Taut, atmospheric and visually arresting, Nanny tells the story of Aisha (a revelatory Anna Diop,) an undocumented Senegalese immigrant working as a domestic help for a privileged New York City couple.
Aisha hopes to work to save up enough money to bring her son over to the United States. However, she is forced to contend with unreasonable employers and disturbing otherworldly visions rooted in West African folklore that haunt her dreams.
Jusu’s singular and entrancing vision both embraces and subverts genre tropes while presenting a culturally specific story spanning two continents and bridging gaps between Africa and the North American diaspora.
