Pocc x Picturehouse An evening with Simon Frederick

“An Evening With…” is a series of screenings presented by the Pocc Film Club in welcoming highly accomplished filmmakers from the Pocc community and beyond, to discuss their catalogue of moving-image work and their nuanced and unique experiences within the film industry. For our first screening of 2022, the Pocc Film Club welcomes critically acclaimed director and photographer Simon Frederick to discuss his groundbreaking catalogue of documentary work. Simon Frederick’s ascendancy from self-taught photographer to award winning and frequently commissioned director and producer, is one that is pioneering and inspirational. We will be screening and discussing excerpts from “Black Is The New Black” (BBC) and “They’ve Gotta Have Us” (Netflix). “Black filmmakers are taking control of their writing, directing and filmmaking”, Frederick notes – a level of artistry that is elevating the artform and revolutionizing cinema beyond what he ever thought possible. His documentary series are an exploration of this evolution. Moderated by Pocc filmmaker Sasha Nathwani, we will be discussing Simon Frederick’s approach to documentary filmmaking, how to pitch your show to TV commissioners alongside the relevant themes presented in his series, ranging from breaking through barriers while maintaining one's personal identity and cultural heritage. This event is relevant for both documentary and narrative filmmakers, and anyone interested in pitching ideas to television and streaming commissioners. The screening will also feature a short film from a Pocc filmmaker, merchandise, refreshments, and an opportunity to meet and network with members of the Pocc community and industry professionals. This event is supported by Picturehouse and Dark Matter.
