Iranian writer-director Ana Lily Amirpour’s debut feature is an atmospheric vampire story filmed in stunning monochrome and chock-full of allegorical references.
In run-down Bad City, the Girl in question (Vand, Argo) is actually a hijab-cloaked bloodsucker. During her nocturnal ramblings on her skateboard she bumps into a hooker and feasts on a drug dealer and a pimp. She meets Arash (Marandi), a handsome James Dean lookalike who’s on his way home from a party dressed as Dracula. He dreams of leaving Bad City, but has to support his junkie father (veteran Iranian actor Marshall Manesh, The Big Lebowski). Visual jokes abound, and the slow-burn romance between Arash and the titular Girl is beautifully modulated in this wonderfully strange film.
