QMUL: Panel talk and screening

Event: FANTASTIC MACHINE preview screening plus panel discussion

This event is specially curated by Picturehouse for Film students and will consist of a screening of the upcoming release FANTASTIC MACHINE from our distribution arm, Picturehouse Entertainment, followed by an approx 80min panel discussion and Q&A with a panel of industry experts.

The panel discussion will cover:

• how a cinema is run & structured and how it generates income
  
• the impact of Covid on cinema's commercial and programming strategies
• the role of a film programmer
• programming documentaries, repertory film & alternative content
• how cinemas fit into the wider UK film exhibition scene (festivals, streaming, different types of cinema) 
• how cinemas balance commercial and creative interests
• how Picturehouse market/build audiences for a non-feature film or a repertoire screening

Fantastic Machine is a film - about film - that calls into question not just the nature of “documentary” evidence and the “truth” of a photographic image, but the very art of filmmaking itself.

It’s an entertaining, thought-provoking, whistle-stop tour through two centuries of image-making from the birth of photography in the 1820s to today, when everyone is a potential ’content provider’.

Filmmakers Axel Danielson and Maximilien Van Aertryck use a vast collection of clips and footage to illustrate their contemplation on the science, politics and ethics of the moving image and its impact on the way in which we see the world and each other.  

Fantastic Machine reflects on how the medium has been used and abused to document, exploit, and create “reality,” and whether attempts to manipulate – and monetise – filmmaking have or haven’t changed, from the illusions of early filmmakers such as Georges Melies to the current era of fake news.
