Starring: Paddy Considine, Jodie Whittaker
Duration: 92 min
Champion boxer Matty Burton (Considine) faces the dilemma common to many aging sportsman – that of when to stop. His lucrative pension pot is a last bout to safeguard his title against the younger, unremittingly gobby Andre ‘The Future’ Bryte (Welsh). Although clearly outclassed, Matty wins the fight on points, but suffers serious head injuries that leave him in need of surgery and a long period of convalescence. His adored wife Emma is initially supportive and cares for him lovingly, but that evaporates when he starts abusing her. It takes his erstwhile training team and an unexpectedly contrite Bryte to nurse him to recovery. As with his directorial debut, Tyrannosaur, Considine’s second big-screen feature is about the role of self-awareness in redemption. A potent drama, with marvellous and committed performances all round.
