Brigsby Bear

Director: Dave McCary.
Starring: Kyle Mooney, Greg Kinnear, Michaela Watkins. USA 2017. 97 mins.

Hovering somewhere between Dogtooth and Be Kind Rewind, this gently sardonic commentary on the consequences of having lived in an unreal world when reality finally bites is a first big-screen effort from Saturday Night Live director Dave McCary. Straggle-haired SNL regular Kyle Mooney plays James who was kidnapped as a baby and brought up in isolation. His surrogate parents (Mark Hamill and Jane Adams) entertain him with their homemade, cheesy TV series, ‘Brigsby Bear’. When he is rescued by friendly cop (Greg Kinnear) and reunited with his real parents (Michaela Watkins and Matt Walsh), James’s disturbed reaction is to recreate the TV character - who he of course must play - for a movie. Co-written by Mooney, the film evokes neither too much nor too little sympathy for James’s predicament and is joyously quirky.
