The Man Who Invented Christmas
Director: Bharat Nalluri.
Starring: Dan Stevens, Christopher Plummer, Jonathan Pryce. Ireland/Canada 2017. 104 mins.
Popular historian Les Standiford’s eponymous best-seller told how, in order to revive his then flagging career, Charles Dickens was obliged, in 1843, to self-publish A Christmas Carol. The novel soon caused a sensation, and it revived much of the nostalgia and tradition we associate with Christmas today. Director Bharat Nalluri (Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day) has turned Standiford’s story into a cracking cinematic yarn. Dan Stevens (Beauty And The Beast) plays the hard-pressed, impoverished author who finishes the novel in just six weeks and is swept away by his own story. In the process the now legendary characters of Ebenezer Scrooge (Plummer) and Tiny Tim are vividly brought to life. Adding to the poignant fun are Jonathan Pryce as Dickens’s father, John Dickens, and Miriam Margolyes as Mrs Fisk. Just in time for the festive season!
