Puccini’s opera of young love set in nineteenth-century bohemian Paris. The poverty-stricken poet Rodolfo and his artist friends eke out a precarious existence, alternately working, quarrelling, dodging the landlord and living it up in their local café. When Rodolfo meets the delicate seamstress Mimì, the pair fall in love. But Mimì is ill, Rodolfo is jealous and their romance is doomed. Puccini’s tragedy is about the dramas and details of everyday and our imperfect lives. His beautiful score is packed with opera’s most famous music including the aria ‘Quando M’en Vo’ and the poignant final scene over which the composer himself wept. This revival of Richard Jones’s character-led production of 2017 perfectly captures La Bohème’s mixture of comedy, romance and tragedy, with striking designs by Stewart Laing. Starring in this performance are Sonya Yoncheva as Mimì, Charles Castronovo as Rodolfo, Andrzej Filończyk as Marcello and Aida Garifullina as Musetta. Emmanuel Villaume conducts.
