We’re thrilled to welcome producer Peter Gilbert for a live post-screening Q&A to celebrate the 25th anniversary of this seminal film. Of the 500,000 kids who play basketball in American high school every year, about 25 will make the grade to play one season professionally. Steven James’ extraordinary and entertaining HOOP DREAMS documents the lives and dreams of two real-life hopefuls growing up in a deprived Chicago suburb, charting an odyssey that begins when two teenagers are spotted by recruiters for St. Joseph’s, a Catholic ‘public school’ and powerhouse of basketball prowess, to the time, four-and-a half years later, when they’re on the threshold of uncertain careers. More than a sports-documentary, HOOP DREAMS captures the gut-wrenching tension of vocational sport but devotes equal concern to adolescent uncertainties, family pressures and the bleak realities of inner city life. The late Roger Ebert was famously an early advocate for this film and said in an October 1994 review, “A film like Hoop Dreams is what the movies are for. It takes us, shakes us, and makes us think in new ways about the world around us. It gives us the impression of having touched life itself… It is one of the great movie-going experiences of my lifetime.”
