A unique and passionate work, Fidelio was Beethoven’s only opera. It tells the story of Leonore who, disguised as ‘Fidelio’, daringly attempts to rescue her husband Florestan as he lies in chains in a political prison. As the powerful music charts its themes of unwavering love and the cruelty of an oppressive regime, we are thrilled by the famous Act I Quartet, of the Prisoners’ Chorus and Florestan’s impassioned Act II cry in the darkness and vision of hope. At its premiere in Vienna in 1805, the opera will have resonated strongly for an audience subject to occupation by French troops during the Napoleonic Wars. Now, Tobias Kratzer’s new staging brings together the dark reality of the French Revolution ‘Terror’ and our own time, with the blaze of hope that is Fidelio’s message of shared humanity. Starring Jonas Kaufmann as Florestan and Lise Davidsen as Leonore, and conducted by Antonio Pappano.
