The story of a dashing pirate on the high seas who rescues a beautiful girl from a dastardly slave trader. With cinematic sets including a dramatic shipwreck, Le Corsaire is one of the Bolshoi’s most lavish productions. The piece is famous for its grand pas –in particular the beautiful ‘Jardin Animé’, a fantastical dance of flowers in a garden filled with magical fountains. It is also celebrated for the bravura pas de deux which became popular in Britain after Margot Fonteyn and Nureyev danced it in 1962 and which became one of their favourite encore pieces. This stunning 2007 production has been re-worked by ex-Bolshoi director Alexei Ratmansky after Petipa’s 1868 version and has a magnificent new grand pas for 60 dancers, enhancing the work’s nineteenth-century opulence. This is classical ballet at its most sumptuous and exotic, danced with glittering twenty-first century technique. This performance stars Ekaterina Krysanova and Igor Tsvirko.
