Join Oscar-winning producer and Director-at-Large of Birds’ Eye View Mia Bays and Be Manzini, award-winning poet and Director of Caramel Film club, for a post-screening Q&A with Queen & Slim director Melina Matsoukas and writer Lena Waithe. Be Manzini will also perform a specially written poem in tribute of the film.

From trailblazing, Emmy-winning writer Lena Waithe (Master of None) and Melina Matsoukas, the visionary director of some of this generation’s most powerful pop-culture experiences, including Beyonce’s “Formation” and the Nike “Equality” campaign, comes Makeready’s unflinching new drama, Queen & Slim.

While on a forgettable first date together in Ohio, a black man (Get Out’s Daniel Kaluuya) and a black woman (Jodie Turner-Smith, in her first starring feature-film role), are pulled over for a minor traffic infraction. The situation escalates, with sudden and tragic results, when the man kills the police officer in self-defence. Terrified and in fear for their lives, the man, a retail employee, and the woman, a criminal defence lawyer, are forced to go on the run. But the incident is captured on video and goes viral, and the couple unwittingly become a symbol of trauma, terror, grief and pain for people across the country.

This event is presented in collaboration with Reclaim The Frame - a mission to bring ever-greater audiences to films by women to widen and enrich cinema’s perspective of the world, run by charity Birds’ Eye View, and backed by the BFI’s Audience Fund.
